Situated atop a natural peninsula, The Cliff Bay provides panoramic Atlantic Ocean views and private beach access. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a Michelin-starred restaurant and free Wi-Fi.
All guest rooms have twin queen-size beds, an en suite marble bathroom and an LCD cable TV with DVD/CD player. In addition, all rooms feature a veranda with table and chairs, giving views of the Madeira Mountains or the Bay of Funchal.

| Main disadvantages: Half board is not very good value. In the main restaurant the evening
meal has good starters and desserts but the main courses are poor value.
If you choose to dine in Il Gallo D'Oro only part of the half board
payment is allowed towards the cost of dinner. |
| Main advantages: The Cliff Bay is in an excellent position, the rooms are well appointed,
particularly the 7th floor rooms where we were staying. The staff are
pleasant and efficient without being obsequious and the hotel is smart
without being stuffy. The breakfasts in Il Gallo D'Oro (the hotel's Michelin-
star restaurant - limited to 7th & 8th floor guests at breakfast) are
very good. Bar prices are reasonable for a five star hotel. The spa is
good as are the pools. |

| Main advantages: The total commitment to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and the
unfailing friendliness of all staff in all departments of the hotel. In
addition its luxurious facilities and spacious rooms and common areas
giving an uncrowded but active feel. Loved the outside appearance
especially the garden, sun terraces and room window boxes. Its location
is ideal being close to Funchal but also far enough away to create a
tranquil environment. |

| Main disadvantages: Pretentious Michelin-starred "gourmet" restaurant (Euros 135 per head). Receiving an unsolicited time-share pitch from the hotel was unwelcome. |
| Main advantages: Superb location within walking distance of excellent restaurants. Beautiful views from the room and balcony across to Funchal harbour. Bright and airy, much less stuffy than the more famous Reid's hotel next door. Well-appointed room with plenty of space. Free wi-fi. Plenty of free car-parking (hire car essential to do the island justice). Excellent buffet breakfast. |

| Main advantages: A lovely Hotel in a great location. Friendly and helpful staff and a place we would love to return to sooner rather than later. Madeira is a great place to go to for a restful break the weather was fine and it was great to see the sun at this time of the year. |

| Main disadvantages: After the check-out the luggage is stored in the luggage room and is delivered to guests outside the hotel (in front of the main entrance). So if you need to pack something just before your transfer to the airport you will do it in front of the hotel. |

| Main disadvantages: Certainly a detail but when taking a shower, the water is flooding the bathroom floor. No solution to this problem has obviously been found since our last visit in September 2009. |
| Main advantages: While a little expensive, The Cliff Bay does offer all the facilities & advantages one would expect from a 5* hotel. We have spent a wonderful time in a good atmosphere. The quality of the service by the staff and management is excellent and so is the quality of the food in the Rose Garden Restaurant. |

| Main disadvantages: restaurant perhaps let down by very high wine prices - mark up in some cases of six or seven times retail price. Shame because the food is very good and it would be nice to accompany it with good wine rather than have to economise by drinking beer. |
