Located in the hills surrounding Funchal, this 18th-century mansion is set in extensive botanical gardens with 500 different plant species. All rooms have balconies overlooking the gardens or the Atlantic. Quinta Jardins do Lago's spacious rooms are elegantly furnished and include a seating area, a marble bathroom and a large balcony. Main advantages: The size of the hotel and the peaceful surroundings suited us iseally. The staff were friendly, courteous and well trained. Food was good and services were altogether excellent.

Main disadvantages: Bed was a bit hard , but when we mentioned it they immediately put an extra topper on which really helped, plumbing in the old part is a bit noisy but thats the charm of an old property!

Main advantages: Beautiful historic building set in wonderful gardens. We , stayed in a junior suite in the old part of the hotel , the room was large with a lovely balcony overlooking the gardens, bathrooms and furnishings would benefit from some updating to make it really great. Staff throughout were excellent , really helpful and friendly. Everywhere was very clean and well kept in the hotel and also the gardens, very peaceful and quiet area so you may need a car or use taxis to get around. We didnt eat in the restaurant but the food at the pool was very good and not too expensive .

Main advantages: the friendliness, courtesy and helpfulness of all the staff. the gardens, an oasis in the city. the rooms and the pool, all very clean and high standard.

Main disadvantages: The location although beautiful is very hilly ( it is Madeira). They have no good english tea and have little idea how to poach eggs. The prices for evening meals are well above those of the local restaurants of similar quality, but still good.

Main advantages: This hotel is not easy to find from the freeway so you need clearer directions. When you get there the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful and stayed that way through the whole stay. The gardens are outstanding as is the pool area, the busy Funchal streets could be a million miles away. However it is only a 10-15 minute walk to some of the best restaurants in the city with 5 euro cab ride back in the late evening. The hotel staff had great recommendations for these.

Main disadvantages: Infrequent shuttle bus service to town (only 4 a day), with first shuttle not until 10.30. The steep downhill walk to town takes a good 20mins, which became tedious after several days. Given the quiet, more intimate atmosphere of this hotel, we find it less suitable for children and were disturbed by the noise of the young family in the room next to us, although the rooms seem quite well insulated otherwise

Main advantages: This hotel is the perfect choice for those wanting to be away from the bustle of town, especially if you prefer a smaller, more intimate atmosphere. The setting, gardens and swimming pool are exquisite and the rooms all have pleasant views especially the superior rooms with seaview. The restaurant also offers very good quality but pricey compared to restaurants in town
