Partly housed in a modern building and partly set in a historical palace with a tiled façade, Das Artes is centrally located in Porto. Main advantages: Total attention to quality and comfort at a very competitive price. New facilities and furniture. Friendly, helpful and highly professional staff. The location required a slightly longer walk to center of city than some other hotels, but this trade-off was well worthwhile for the quality and price of the accommodation. We stayed in 6 hotels during our 14 night stay in Portugal - the Das Artes was both the cheapest and the best (only the Hotel Bairro Alto in Lisbon, at more than 3x the price, could compare).

Main disadvantages: Reception staff during the day were good, but one night staff very grumpy. Main complaint is it;s location. Porto is so hilly that you want to take buses to various places. Treat them like a metro, you need to keep changing buses to get anywhere. Staff were not very helpful in where to catch buses and what services they were. For information, two blocks down from the street you are on is Hospital san Antonio - quite a few buses go there. The 303 bus goes from centre along the street you are on, and goes down the next street to the centre. But be prepared for lot of Walking in Porto.

Main advantages: The room size and bed were very big, meaning plenty of room to stretch out. The outdoor bar area is lovely.

Main disadvantages: No metro stations nearby, but taxis are reasonably priced. A rooster woke us up early every morning (yes, in the city centre!), so if you are a light sleeper, consider ear plugs.

Main advantages: Modern, clean hotel and rooms in a quiet residential area. Old town and river Douro within walking distance (uphill when returning). Many cafes and a couple of restaurants nearby. Excellent, high-quality breakfast buffet with a multitude of choices.

Main advantages: The breakfast was unusually good for Portugal (where breakfast is usually just a cafe and a pastry), and included fresh juices, cooked eggs, sausage, mushrooms, a selection of pastries, yogurts, fresh fruit, cereals, and unlimited cups of coffee or tea. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and friendly, especially at the front desk.

Main disadvantages: The hotel has not yet answered my email sent 2 days ago regarding something I may have left in the room...

Main advantages: We enjoyed our2-night stay at the hotel. Good location, pleasant room.We didn't take the breakfast as it seemed overpriced and there are many small bars around with perfectly good coffee and pastries. Wifi was not working in the room but the reception gave us a cable so you can plug your computer directly onto the internet.
