This luxurious 5-star hotel is directly along the Ringstrasse in the heart of Vienna. Inaugurated in 1873 by Emperor Francis Joseph, it features a gourmet restaurant and a rooftop spa. Main disadvantages: Modest breakfast menue, should be more choice and variety

Main advantages: Great historical hotel, wonderful room with superb bed and linen (we slept till 10am and overslept conference opening :-)), good concierge and valet service, great bathroom amenities, free mandarines and chocolate served in room etc.

Main disadvantages: My only complaint is the wifi service which simply did not work after logging in from room 203 meaning I had to go to the business centre on the Mezzanine every time I accessed the net for e-mails, travel info. etc. At 9 euros per hour this adds 18 euros per day to the stay. Why does the occasional hotel still insist on treating this communication medium as a privilege for which you must pay rather than what it is, an essential fact of life in the 21st century which has all but replaced the telephone.

Main advantages: The hotel is perfectly situated on the Ring in the centre of town only 300 metres from the Opera. The staff and concierge are highly trained/skilled and service is almost instantaneous. I had my tastiest Vienna Schnitzel ever in their cafe. Taxis are summoned immediately from the nearby rank. The room was large with high ceilings and beautifully furnished and the bed, when converted from 2 singles to a king, was extremely comfortable.

Harold Oakville, Canada - Individual tour

Main disadvantages: The concierge desk had a tendency to be more brusque than I care for. When I ask a question or for directions I expect a bit of effort and a reciprocal smile.

Main advantages: The Imperial Is reminiscent of an era of tradition and authenticity. Nothing about the hotel, staff or food is 'faux'. Front desk, restaurant/cafe and housekeeping staff were all excellent.
